Bennett Lone, distraught after the death of Lark Andreasen, is accepted at the highway patrol academy and studies to become an officer. Afterward, he is posted to a remote area of the state bordering on a Native American reservation. He develops a close relationship with Thomas T. Trueblood, a Kiowa tribal policeman. Together they become involved in mysterious, criminal activities. Ben also meets two women who will figure prominently in his life, one to whom he becomes engaged to marry, one who stars in pornographic films. Out of these relationships love and desire and loss will rise and conflict. Ben is not liked by his supervisors and is uncomfortable with most of his co-workers but he is mentored by Trueblood who schools him in the ancient ways of the "old ones." At length, Ben comes to love the harsh land where he realizes he has been encountered by Spirit.
